The charity is independent of any national charities and relies on the generosity of local people and organisations for funding and volunteers.
The charity is founded on a belief that life need not stop because of sight loss. The hope is for visually impaired people to gain greater independence and a better quality of life.
The services they offer include:
Low Vision Clinics: held at the Sight Centres, where clients are assessed by qualified staff for low vision aids to assist with reading, watching television and advice is given on lighting. T: 01872 266702.
Using Technology: gain hands-on experience of a range of unique equipment such as video magnifiers, talking scanners or speech software on a computer. For a one-to-one assessment. T: 01872 266705.
Equipment Demonstration: from talking clocks to big button telephones, equipment is on display at various locations in Cornwall. The demonstration kitchen has items such as talking microwaves and tactile timers. Orders can be made and delivered. T: 01872 266701.
Benefits advice: an experienced Benefits Advisor can assist in making claims for all benefits during either a home visit or a Sight Centre appointment. T: 01872 266711.
Talking Support: weekly telephone contact with a volunteer can help with some of life's difficulties and frustrations by offering encouragement and a little support. This service is free of charge. T: 01872 261110
Counselling: at home or elsewhere, counselling is available for anyone, including carers, who are affected by visual impairment. Experienced professionals work within the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BCAP) ethical framework.
Befriending: You can receive befriending at home visits to sort out mail, accompany you on short strolls, make local library visits or simply have a chat. All volunteer befrienders are security checked. T: 01872 266710
Advocacy: supporting individuals with issues such as benefits, housing, community care and transport. A small team of trained and supervised volunteers will talk to enquirers on the telephone, liaise with other agencies and visit if necessary. T: 01872 266708.
The charity also provides mobile sensory equipment and talking books, administers adult and children's holidays as well as being linked to 25 local clubs and activities.
