In 2005 we merged with a sister charity and rebranded the organisation to disAbility Cornwall & Isles of Scilly. The organisation has flourished and grown and now provides a range of services, activities and functions which align with our mission to Represent, Include, Support and Empower (RISE).
We are governed by a voluntary Board of Trustees / Directors, which will always consist of a minimum of 75% disabled people to ensure we remain user-led. The Trustees have general control over the management and administration of the charity and carry ultimate responsibility.
The Social Model of Disability
The 'Social Model' underpins all of our work. It explains that:
- Disability is caused by society's failure to adapt to the different ways in which people with impairments accomplish activities
- Society in general (and the non-disabled majority in particular) bears the responsibility for disabling people who are prevented from accomplishing activities in their own ways
- Disability can be best overcome by society learning to adapt to the variety of its citizens.
(We have used the term 'disabled people' because it implies the environment and not the impairment disables the people. Other people prefer 'people with disabilities' to 'disabled people' as it puts the person first. Neither is wrong as it generally comes down to individual preference.)
