Keeping Safe
The Safe Places Scheme is an initiative which helps people with a learning difficulty or disability if feeling scared or at risk while out and about in the community and need support right away.
A ‘Safe Place’ can be a shop, café, pub, community centre, local organisation or anywhere with the exception of a private dwelling. Stickers, such as the one above, are placed in the Safe Place window. People who may be in need of this usually carry a yellow card which has their name and the telephone numbers of two nominated contacts for them on it, which could be family, friends or a carer.

If you, or someone you know, finds themselves in need of help while out and about, feels threatened, or are unable to get home for some reason, go to any of the nominated Safe Places for help. A map of Safe Places can be found here.

Hate Crime
If you are concerned about hate crime, if you have been a victim, such as being bullied, harassed or if someone has taken advantage of you, or if you would like to talk to someone about it, you can contact a Third Party Reporting Centre, such as disAbility Cornwall & Isles of Scilly. These centres have been established across Cornwall to provide information, advice and support with any concerns.
Or you can go to the Report-It website to report hate crimes that have happened to you or someone you know.
Mate Crime
Mate crime is when people pretend to be friends with a person who is vulnerable but go on to exploit them. People who commit Mate Crimes might be nice to your face. These people are often not rude, violent or aggressive, nor do they steal your things. They pretend to be nice to you. You can find out more about mate crime on the Safety Net website.
